Alwar: A suspect accused of chopping off both legs of a 65-year-old woman to steal her silver anklets escaped from police custody in Bharatpur district early Monday.Jaipur police were escorting Ramavatar Bairwa, 32, back from a custodial investigation into a separate case at the time of the incident. The group was on its way to Gangapur City jail, where Bairawa had been lodged, when nightfall forced it to halt at Sewar police station late Sunday. Bairwa escaped from the lockup around 1.50am after tricking a sentry into letting him use the toilet, police said. Sewar police station SHO Satish Chand Sharma said a manhunt has been launched to nab the fugitive. He is accused of cutting off both legs of one Kamla Devi, an elderly resident of Sittauda village in Bamanwas, Gangapur City, and escaping with her silver anklets on Oct 8.He and a female accomplice were arrested a day later.Officers from Pratap Nagar police station in Jaipur had executed a production warrant on Bairwa Friday on a case involving the kidnapping and robbery of a woman.
