Jaipur: City traffic police booked 219 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve, a sharp rise from 12 such cases recorded on Dec 31, 2024. The intensified “challan action” followed a series of new and innovative awareness campaigns launched by city police, including the distribution of pink warning slips at bars and nightclubs.Officials said that while 406 and 547 traffic challans were issued on the nights of Dec 31 in 2023 and 2024 respectively, the number jumped significantly in 2025, with Jaipur traffic police issuing 2,003 challans in a single night. Of these, 219 motorists were booked for drink-and-drive violations. In comparison, only 12 motorists were booked for driving under the influence on New Year’s Eve in 2024, while eight such cases were recorded on Dec 31, 2023.DCP (traffic) Sumeet Meharda, said, following a series of recent accidents across Rajasthan, especially after the Harmada incident, the traffic police were proactive since Wednesday evening.After managing the additional rush of tourists throughout the day, additional manpower was deployed on city roads to manage party-goers. This time, we ensured that officials were placed at strategic locations so that action could be taken against errant motorists,” said MehardaHe added that the enforcement drive was complemented by several awareness initiatives. This year, Jaipur Police launched a special campaign at hotels, restaurants and bars across the city. Under the initiative, customers were given a pink-coloured warning slip along with their final bill, cautioning them against driving after consuming alcohol.In addition, traffic police installed display boards at key locations across the city, urging motorists to avoid drinking and driving, officials said.
