Defence min to unveil 1971 war hero’s statue in Barmer

Jaisalmer: Defence minister Rajnath Singh will unveil a statue of Barmer’s 1971 war hero, Thakur Balwant Singh, in Bakhasar village on Dec 13. The ceremony will be attended by Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, deputy CM Diya Kumari, RSS regional pracharak Nimbaram, Seema Jan Kalyan Samiti’s Nimbsingh, and local MLAs.As a border guard, Thakur Balwant Singh provided vital support to the Indian Army during the 1971 war with Pakistan, particularly during the Chhachhro Raid, which led to Indian Army’s capture of Chhachhro in Sindh. Singh’s local knowledge and courage were instrumental in driving out the Pakistani Army from the region.In recognition of Singh’s contributions, several criminal cases registered against him were withdrawn, and he was granted two all-India weapon licences. Singh passed away in 1991.
