Jaipur: Rajasthan Police’s Cyber Crime branch has issued an alert that warns citizens against a new extortion scam involving fake court summons and warrants. The alert says fraudsters are impersonating judicial and police officers to swindle money through fear and deception.Deputy inspector general of police (Cyber Crime) Vikas Sharma said criminals were using forged court documents, fake digital signatures and doctored stationery to make notices appear authentic. Threats are being sent via WhatsApp and email, claiming recipients face imminent arrest or legal action unless they pay a ‘bail’ or ‘case cancellation’ fee immediately, he said.“Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in mimicking official communication”, Sharma added.Gangs involved in this scam send victims counterfeit summons or warrants with fake case numbers and court stamps. They then impersonate court staff or police officials, and, by using aggressive and coercive language, pressure unsuspecting victims into transferring money.Police officials advised citizens to verify any court summons or warrant directly with the issuing court or local police and to avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown numbers. They also urged people not to transfer money to strangers or share personal details like Aadhaar cards, bank account numbers, or OTPs.Anybody who receives such messages or suspects foul play should immediately file a complaint at the nearest police station or cyber police station, or register a report at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in).Citizens can also contact the Cyber Helpline (1930) or the Cyber Helpdesk (9256001930 / 9257510100).Officials said the alert was issued after multiple reports surfaced across Rajasthan of citizens being conned into paying money on the pretext of fake legal action.
