Jaisalmer: School children from dozens of villages in Jaisalmer refused to attend classes in govt schools Monday and instead gathered outside their schools along with fellow villagers, raising slogans to demand protection of Oran land — traditional common pasturelands often considered as sacred. The protest was led by the Oran Bachao committee which has been fighting for months to seek registration of Oran land and common water bodies in the official revenue records. The school boycott was in response to what the protesters described as continued govt and administrative indifference to their demands.Students from SBK College also participated in the protest, with their principal submitting a memorandum addressed to the chief minister demanding registration of community lands and water bodies.Sumer Singh Sanwata, coordinator of the Oran Bachao committee, described the school boycott as a warning and said the movement will be intensified, with a major protest planned for Oct 16. Meanwhile, the sit-in protest by the Oran Bachao committee at the district headquarters entered its 22nd day on Monday.
