Jaipur: Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Tuesday said his govt is committed to making Rajasthan an “elderly-friendly state” through policies and schemes that ensure dignity, security and an active life for senior citizens. His remarks came on the eve of International Day of Older Persons, to be observed Wednesday.Calling senior citizens the “strength of families and heritage of society,” Sharma said it was the collective responsibility of govt and society to provide care and respect to the elderly. He added that under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, several programmes have been launched to support them. On Oct 1, individuals and institutions working for elderly welfare will be honoured at the district level. Officials said all new welfare and infrastructure projects will include senior-friendly provisions. Housing schemes will feature ramps, supportive staircases, parks and medical facilities. “The state currently runs 63 old-age homes providing food, healthcare and shelter to destitute citizens. Day-care centres such as Shravan Kumar Welfare Ashrams also offer medical support, adult education, religious activities and recreation, the Chief Minister said.Sharma said the Parents and Senior Citizens Maintenance Act is being strictly enforced, with tribunals set up at subdivision and district levels to protect their rights.
