Jaipur: After 13 years, the rates for elephant rides at Amber Fort have been revised, and the rides have resumed following a suspension of several days, bringing relief to both tourists and elephant owners. The Department of Archaeology and Museums issued formal orders to restart the popular attraction, which was halted due to safety concerns. Under the new rates, domestic and international visitors are now required to pay Rs 2,500 per ride, up from Rs 1,500. The charges have been effective since Sept 17.Ballu Khan, a mahout, said the increase was long overdue, as the last revision was in 2012. “At present, there are 68 elephants ferrying tourists at Amber Fort. It was difficult to meet expenses for feeding elephants. During winter, elephants take five rounds a day, and in summer, two to three depending on the temperature,” he said. The rides were suspended after a wall near Ram Bagh, in front of the Jwala Mata Temple, fell on Aug 23, prompting authorities to halt operations to ensure visitor safety. The closure immediately affected tourist activity, particularly in the elephant rides, causing financial strain for elephant owners.Abdul, one owner, said, “Expenses were difficult to meet. Daily feeding costs reach Rs 4,500, so this hike was necessary. We are relieved that the rides are starting again. The temporary halt caused a huge financial strain, and the restart will help us recover. Tourists returning to Amber Fort bring essential support not just to our families, but to the local community as well.”Amber Fort, one of Rajasthan’s most visited heritage sites, offers tourists a unique view of its architecture and surrounding landscape. Officials emphasised that safety protocols have been strengthened. He said, “Visitor safety remains our top priority. The rides were opened only after checking all parameters. All necessary precautions have been implemented to ensure a secure experience for all.”
