Jaipur: In a major boost to medical education, the National Medical Commission (NMC) Tuesday granted approval for the establishment of two more medical colleges in the state, one in Tonk and the other in Jaisalmer. While the state requested 100 seats for each institution, the NMC has approved 50 seats for both colleges, allowing them to begin their academic session in 2025-26. In the past eight years, the number of MBBS seats have gone up with the establishment of new medical colleges in both govt and private sectors. The increased seats are giving more hope to aspirants preparing for NEET-UG. In 2017-18, the state had 17 medical colleges, including govt and private, offering 2,750 MBBS seats. The number of medical colleges has gone up from 17 in 2017-18 to 43 in 2025-26. The seats have also gone up from 2,750 in 2017-18 to 5.768 now, including 100 seats of Tonk and Jaisalmer medical colleges. In the first round of counselling for NEET-UG (medical and dental) 2025 admissions, which started on Aug 21 and concluded on Aug 26, 4,224 students took admissions in the medical and dental colleges of the state. In the state, 7,010 seats in the state’s medical and dental colleges were available for admissions. Currently, the state has 5,768 medical seats and 1,342 dental seats in all the 32 govt medical colleges, 11 private medical colleges, and 15 dental medical colleges. With two new medical colleges in Tonk and Jaisalmer receiving permission, the number of govt medical colleges increased from 30 to 32. The medical education department was hopeful that they would get permission for new medical colleges in Tonk and Jaisalmer by the NMC for the first round, but it received a setback as these medical colleges were not included in the first round. Now, these medical colleges have received the nod from the Centre, and medical education has got a boost.
