Lecturer’s suicide note alleges dowry harassment by in-laws

Jodhpur: Police Monday recovered a suicide note related to govt school lecturer Sanju Bishnoi (32) and her daughter Yashasvi (3) in which she levelled allegations of harassment against her in-laws, citing it as the reason for taking the extreme step. Sanju, posted at the govt school in Saranada village in Jodhpur, immolated herself with her daughter Yashasvi in her lap at her home, on Aug 22. ACP (Mandore) Nagendra Kumar said that the mother and the daughter were alone at home at the time of the fateful incident. “After returning home from school, Sanju locked herself inside the house with her daughter, poured petrol over both of them, and sat on a chair. She then set both of them on fire. After catching fire, they fell onto the floor. The daughter died on the spot, while Sanju succumbed to her injuries on Saturday at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital,” said Kumar. On Sunday, the deceased’s father, Omaram, lodged a complaint at Dangiyawas police station, alleging that his daughter was being harassed for dowry. “We gave them a car and many other things as dowry. But they continued to harass her for more. Things worsened after the birth of Yashasvi,” the father stated in his complaint. The ACP said that an FIR was filed against the victim’s husband, her parents-in-law and sister-in-law. An investigation is underway in the matter. “We have found a suicide note. Sanju levelled allegations of harassment from her in-laws in this note,” said the officer, adding that her mobile phone and the note have been seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. “We look forward to obtaining several crucial pieces of information from it,” Kumar said. At the time of the incident, Sanju’s husband, Dilip Bishnoi, was away. When neighbours noticed smoke rising from the house, they called up Sanju’s father. When the family rushed to the spot, they saw their daughter burning alive before their eyes. With great difficulty and help from neighbours, the mother and daughter were taken to the hospital, where Yashasvi was declared dead. After Sanju’s death Saturday, the family protested, accusing the in-laws of abetting the suicide.
