Bhilwara: Acting on the controversy over wearing burqa during duty hours, the Saadat Hospital in Tonk Thursday cancelled the internship of an Unani student for non-compliance of the medical dress code.Further, the hospital’s principal medical officer (PMO), Hanuman Prasad, issued a show-cause notice to the student, Umama Siddique, for allegedly misbehaving with a senior doctor and recording a video in the hospital’s labour room.Prasad said the medical department would file a police complaint also against the intern on charges of recording the video, which was made viral on social media violating the privacy of patients in the labour room. The situation became worse on Thursday when Dr Bindu Gupta, who was involved in the initial confrontation with the intern, and her husband Dr Ankit Gupta, received threats from an unknown individual. This prompted the doctor couple to proceed on a seven-day leave, a decision that has caught attention on social media.Local political figures, including Deoli-Uniara MLA Rajendra Gurjar and BJP members, expressed concerns to Tonk collector Kalpana Agrawal, indicating that the issue was unlikely to be resolved quickly. The controversy began when intern Umama allegedly refused to comply with the hospital’s dress code, which prohibits the wearing of burqa during medical duties. The situation escalated when the intern recorded a video of her confrontation with a senior gynecologist and allegedly released it on social media platforms. In response to the incident, several Hindu organisations, including Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, submitted a memorandum to Tonk’s additional district magistrate Ram Ratan Sokaria, demanding action against what they termed “Islamic activities” in govt offices and against the intern for releasing the video.PMO Prasad underlined the seriousness of the intern’s actions, stating that making a video in the labour room was a grave offence. The hospital reiterated the importance of medical dress code and sent a notice to the Unani college principal to ensure compliance among students.
