Kota: There was ruckus at Kota’s New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) Tuesday after a 22-year-old patient admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) died early morning allegedly due to negligence of the medical staff on duty. Hospital authorities denied the allegation but said they had constituted a committee to investigate.Karan Baghel, resident of Sursagar area, was admitted to NMCH Monday morning and was shifted to ICU in the evening. He passed away Tuesday early morning around 5am, circle inspector at Mahaveer Nagar police station, Ramesh Kavia, said.Kin of the deceased created ruckus in the hospital alleging negligence by medical staff, following which police and the tehsildar from the collector’s office reached the hospital and assured of an investigation and action against the persons responsible, Kavia said.The family members submitted a written complaint and police began investigating the matter, he added.One of the family members at the hospital said, “His (Karan’s) condition deteriorated last night but the doctor on duty did not check the patient. The staff on duty had bolted themselves in their room, some of them sleeping, others enjoying music with ear phones”. He added that attendants of the patient were also driven out of the ICU. He also alleged that the staff declared Karan’s death around 7am while he had succumbed around 5am.The patient suffered from bronchopneumonia and bilateral pneumonitis and despite efforts, he could not be saved, superintendent of NMCH, Dr Ashutosh Sharma, said.The superintendent denied allegations of negligence and staff driving out attendants from ICU. He, however, said a committee chaired by additional principal Dr Pratima Jaiswal had been constituted to probe into the allegations. Meanwhile, the body was handed over to family members after postmortem by a medical board.
