Jaipur: The state agriculture department on Tuesday launched the country’s first drone-based cloud seeding experiment at the Jamwaramgarh Dam area to revive Ramgarh Lake and address the region’s water crisis. Although the technology failed twice on the inaugural day, the scientists finally managed to fly the drones up to a height of 400-feet in the third attempt. The initiative, involving around 60 drones, is aimed to disperse special chemicals into rain clouds to stimulate the formation of water droplets, potentially triggering a rainfall. However, on Tuesday afternoon when a large crowd gathered at the historic Ramgarh Lake — located around 35km north of Jaipur — to witness this event, the drones failed to take off in the first two attempts. It was only in the third attempt that the drones managed to fly up to a height of 400-feet and managed to hit the targeted clouds.“The unexpected crowds caused network disruptions, forcing the drones into auto-landing mode. The second attempt after reducing the crowd also failed as the network jammed again, forcing the drone into auto-landing mode due to GPS signal loss. After this, the crowd was dispersed, and the drone successfully gave a demo flight,” an official present at the launch said.
