Toddler abducted from Jaipur railway station rescued, woman held

Jaipur: A one-and-a-half-year-old boy abducted from outside Jaipur railway station Tuesday evening was rescued Wednesday from Nagaur district. Police arrested a woman who confessed she kidnapped the child because her daughter was unable to conceive a son.DCP (West) Hanuman Prasad Meena said that the accused Rekha Devi (46) is from Sikar district and currently lives in Kathputli Colony in Jaipur. She told police she abducted the child because her daughter could not bear a son. Police said Devi was aware of the complainant’s vulnerable situation—new to the city, without relatives, and living under the Hasanpura bridge—and exploited it. According to the FIR, Devi works as a ragpicker and came into contact with the complainant while collecting waste. Mother Pooja alias Amanat Bai, had recently arrived in Jaipur from Guna, Madhya Pradesh, after separating from her husband.“The child, Lucky, was taken around 5.30am Tuesday from the pavement outside Jaipur Railway Station where his mother, Pooja, was staying,” Meena said, adding that she reported the incident at Sadar police station, naming Rekha Devi—who often slept nearby with her own children—as the woman who took the child.Meena said more than 100 officers were involved in the search. A team led by additional DCP Alok Singhal examined CCTV footage from over 100 locations across Jaipur, Ajmer, Phulera, and Nawa in Nagaur. “There was no photograph of the child available with the mother, so police relied on video footage and input from local auto drivers,” Meena told TOI.
