Alwar: The ongoing tussle between the farmers and the govt over borewell digging in Siliserh area led to the closing of Alwar-Sariska-Jaipur road Thursday. Angry farmers from 40 villages with approximately 500 tractors organised a rally towards the city under ‘Save the Lake’ movement in the Siliserh area of Alwar district.Authorities stopped the tractor rally at Ahimsa Circle to prevent them from entering the city. The demonstration ended in the evening after farmer representatives’ discussions with the district collector. The farmers stated that the administration will correspond with the govt, requesting a review of the borewell installation decision. The state govt had previously sanctioned a water scheme worth Rs 23 crore for the city in the Siliserh area of Alwar, which entailed the installation of 35 borewells. The chief minister inaugurated the project on May 20. The govt scheme aims to transport water to Alwar city through borewells around Siliserh, with necessary budgetary approvals already in place. However, farmers in Siliserh contend that borewell drilling will exhaust the water from their land, making agriculture unsustainable and threatening their livelihoods. tnn
