After five days of festivities, women in white sarees with red borders gathered for Devi Baran, offering sweets, paan and prayers to the goddess before applying sindoor to her face and feet. The ritual was followed by Sindoor Khela, during which women smeared vermilion on one another and exchanged greetings, praying for the well-being and prosperity of their families.

“This is a day of pain as Ma Durga leaves for Kailash, her husband’s abode. Now we need to wait almost a year to welcome her again,” said Amit Chatterjee, president of a puja committee in Vaishali Nagar.

Across the city, pandals that had echoed with dhaak, conch shells and community celebrations grew quieter as committees prepared for the final journey. Idols were loaded onto trucks and carriages, with processions moving to the beat of drums as residents gathered along roadsides and balconies for a last glimpse of the goddess.

“As the idol is immersed, another wait begins. Durga Puja brings us tradition, spectacle and togetherness. We bid farewell saying, Aasche bochor, aabar esho Ma (Come again next year, Ma),” said Abhinav Chatterjee from Malviya Nagar, as the celebrations gave way to the promise of her return.
