Jaipur: Vegetable prices have risen across Jaipur amid reduced supplies from local farms and increased demand, with traders expecting rates to ease after Oct 20 as arrivals improve.Green peas are selling at Rs 200-250 per kg and garlic at Rs 150-200 per kg. Tomatoes, capsicum, onions and several other vegetables have also become costlier ahead of winter.Abdul Sagir, a vegetable trader, attributed the increase to lower arrivals from growing areas such as Chomu, Bagru, Bassi, Chaksu and Tonk.“Seasonal changes have affected supplies from local farms. Vegetable production declines during the transition to winter, reducing arrivals, while demand has increased, pushing up prices,” he said.Retail prices of okra range from Rs 45 to Rs 60 per kg, green chillies from Rs 40 to Rs 50, capsicum from Rs 80 to Rs 100, lemons from Rs 70 to Rs 90 and onions from Rs 50 to Rs 60.Another trader, Shiv Shankar Sharma, said green peas, round gourd, tomatoes and garlic had recorded significant price increases. Tomatoes, which were selling at Rs 30-40 per kg earlier, now cost Rs 50-60 in the retail market.“Except for potatoes, bottle gourd and guar beans, prices of almost every vegetable have doubled,” Sharma said.Traders said the seasonal decline in production was likely to affect supplies over the coming weeks, keeping prices elevated in the near term. They expect improved arrivals from around Oct 20 to bring some relief to consumers. The extent of the price correction, however, will depend on how quickly supplies from local growing areas recover.
