Jaipur: A 35-year-old labourer was arrested Sunday for allegedly killing a woman after taking her to an isolated plot near Vatika Ring Road on the pretext of offering work. Police said the accused attempted to sexually assault the woman and attacked her with a stone when she resisted his advances.DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma said the woman had left Vatika Chowk for work on Sept 21 and was later found dead among babool trees near the boundary wall of vacant plots in Khedi Gokulpura. Varma identified the accused as Neeraj, a native of Katni in Madhya Pradesh who was living as a tenant in Vatika.According to police, the woman spoke to a family member around 1.26pm after reaching the worksite. She said the person who had hired her had asked her to clean a plot and remove small plants and that she would return home in the evening. She did not return and her phone was later found switched off.Her body was found around 3pm the following day. Police said her face and head had been crushed with stones and the family suspected sexual assault. Sanganer Sadar police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the BNS.A Forensic Science Laboratory team examined the crime scene, while District Special Team personnel scanned footage from around 100 CCTV cameras in the area. Investigators learnt that the woman had left Vatika Chowk with an unidentified man. Police questioned labourers who regularly gathered at the chowk and identified the man as Neeraj.Technical surveillance later showed that Neeraj had fled Jaipur and was trying to reach his native village in Katni, police said. Teams conducted searches at several locations and eventually traced him to Chhabra in Baran district. He was brought to Jaipur and arrested after questioning.Police said Neeraj had gone to Vatika Chowk looking for work on the day of the incident but returned to his rented room after failing to find employment. He allegedly consumed alcohol before returning to the chowk. According to the preliminary investigation, Neeraj then approached the woman and offered her work to clean an isolated plot near Ring Road. Police allege that he took her there and attempted to sexually assault her. When she resisted his advances, he allegedly picked up a large stone and struck her on the head, killing her before fleeing.
