Jaipur: A plan to make quick money to clear mounting debts allegedly led three young men to attempt to kidnap a chartered accountant in Jaipur and demand Rs 20 lakh in ransom, police said.

The alleged mastermind, 24-year-old Chetan Sharma, was carrying debts of more than Rs 12 lakh and had been unemployed for about a month after working as a delivery executive for an e-commerce company. “His father is bedridden with a spinal problem, and he is the main conspirator and executor of the kidnapping, while another accused, Hanuman Prajapat, allegedly had a debt of around Rs 1 lakh,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajarshi Raj Varma told TOI.They allegedly intended to demand Rs 20 lakh as ransom and use the money to clear their debts.The plan was allegedly executed on Sept 10, when Rajiv Gupta arrived at Central Park for his morning walk. Police said the accused forced him into his Mercedes and drove him out of Jaipur.Gupta allegedly fought back and tried to escape from the moving vehicle. During the struggle, the car went out of control and crashed into a roadside ditch, police said. As people from the surrounding area approached the vehicle, the accused allegedly abandoned the car and fled towards a nearby forest and hilly area.Police said Chetan Sharma is also an accused in a kidnapping case registered at Kho Nagorian police station, in which he had allegedly kidnapped a relative.
