Jaipur: Owning a pet in Jaipur will soon come with greater responsibility. The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has made it mandatory for all pet dogs and cats to be registered by Sept 30.Owners found keeping unregistered pets after the deadline could face a fine of up to Rs 5,000. At the same time, the civic body is also stepping up efforts to promote the adoption of stray dogs and strengthen its Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme.To make registration easier, JMC will organise Dog and Cat On-the-Spot Licensing Camp at IDB, Durgapura, on Aug 2, from 10am to 6pm.The one-day camp will offer on-the-spot pet licensing, free anti-rabies vaccination, health check-ups, deworming, microchipping, Kennel Club of India (KCI) registration, puppy adoption, Indie (stray) dog adoption, reflective collars and feeding support for street dogs, free metal name tags, pet food hampers, discounts on pet boarding and grooming services, and gifts worth up to Rs 2,000 for every registered pet. Organisers will also attempt to set a world record by preparing the largest dog pizza.JMC commissioner Om Kasera said the registration drive is aimed at improving pet welfare rather than penalising owners. “The objective is to protect the health of pets, maintain vaccination records and move towards making Jaipur rabies-free. A proper registration system will also help ensure the safety of both pets and residents,” he said.The civic body has also made registration with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) mandatory for all pet shops, dog and cat breeders, and kennel operators. No pet can be handed over to a buyer without first being registered with the municipal corporation. If a puppy or kitten below 3 months of age is sold, the buyer must submit an undertaking to get the animal vaccinated against rabies.Kasera said the corporation also wants to encourage more people to adopt Indie dogs instead of buying pets. He added that the civic body is working to identify land for a permanent dog shelter and hopes to finalise it before the election Model Code of Conduct comes into force, allowing the ABC programme to be expanded further.Pet registration will cost Rs 1,000 plus GST annually, while renewal will be Rs 500 plus GST. Violating the rules can attract a Rs 2,000 penalty, while keeping an unregistered pet after the deadline may invite a Rs 5,000 fine. The corporation has urged pet owners to complete the registration process before Sept 30.
