Raj intensifies crackdown on deceptive food claims and untested labels

Jaipur: Rajasthan’s Food Safety Commissionerate has intensified its crackdown on food products making misleading health and promotional claims. It is targeting labels that carry unsupported terms such as ‘sports drink’ and ‘energy drink’, which have no prescribed standards under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations .Following recent FSSAI directions against deceptive labelling and advertising, the action was carried out under the state govt’s ‘Shuddh Aahar Milavat Par Vaar’ campaign, supervised by Food Safety and Drug Control Commissioner Dr T. Shubhamangala.A health department team inspected Gaur Healthy Food at Nada Ki Dhani in Golyavas and found ‘Silken’ brand tofu packets carrying unverified claims, including ‘rich in vitamin’, ‘helps in strengthening bones’, ‘reduces risk of anaemia’, ‘anti-cancer properties’, and ‘lowers cholesterol levels’.Dr Shubhamangala said officials collected tofu samples, destroyed around 100 kg of stock comprising 300 packets of 220 gram and 30 packets of 1 kg each, and seized nearly 2,000 packaging pouches. Manufacturing and sale of the product have been halted until revised labels receive approval. In a separate inspection at a warehouse in Malviya Nagar, officials found ‘Fast Up Reload’, a non-carbonated beverage, being marketed online as a ‘sports drink’. Samples and digital evidence were collected.Officials said FSSAI prohibits the use of terms such as ‘sports drink’ and ‘energy drink’ without notified standards and bars unsubstantiated claims relating to disease prevention, therapeutic benefits or nutritional advantages. Violations invite action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, with penalties of up to Rs 10 lakh. Notices have been issued to the firms, and further action will depend on laboratory reports.
