Jaipur tanker owners call off strike after PHED payment assurance

Jaipur: After contractors, PHED-outsourced tanker owners in Jaipur withdrew their strike early Wednesday, bringing relief to residents, particularly in last-mile and peripheral areas dependent on tanker supply. The disruption began Tuesday afternoon when nearly 300 outsourced PHED tankers suddenly stopped operations. The strike severely hit water delivery in Jhotwara, Jagatpura, Vidhyadhar Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Prithviraj Nagar, and parts of Mansarovar and Sanganer, where many households rely on scheduled tanker trips during supply gaps.Manoj Sharma, representing the association of tanker owners in Jaipur, said payments worth Rs 5 crore had been pending for the past 17 months. He said rising fuel prices had made operations increasingly unviable, while owners were also struggling to pay drivers’ wages.“After we started a strike in the afternoon, the state govt and senior PHED officials assured us that they would clear the entire outstanding by next Monday. Accordingly, we have decided to resume work from Wednesday morning till next Monday,” stated Sharma. The sudden stoppage pushed up demand for private tankers Tuesday evening. Several private operators reportedly charged Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 for a 4,000-litre tanker, burdening residents already facing limited water access.Supply conditions improved Wednesday morning after PHED tanker services resumed across affected areas following the assurance on pending dues.Residents said the restart eased immediate concerns over household storage and water.
