Auto union demands fare hike, crackdown on private bike taxis

Jaipur: The Jaipur Metropolitan Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union Monday presented a memorandum to the transport commissioner, setting out a five-point charter of demands, including an increase in fares.“Metered fares for autorickshaws have not increased for a long time. We have requested that the minimum fare be increased to Rs 30 for the first kilometre and Rs 14 per kilometre thereafter. We have also sought a 25% night surcharge between 10.30 pm and 5.30 am,” the union president Kuldeep Singh said. The association also demanded a ban on two-wheelers with private registration numbers operating on app-based rental platforms, alleging that such services violate transport regulations.“Not only is the practice illegal, but it also creates insurance-related complications. If a privately registered two-wheeler meets with an accident while carrying a passenger booked through an app, the insurance company may refuse compensation,” Singh said.Union members pointed out that the Delhi Transport Department recently prohibited similar operations and urged the Rajasthan govt to adopt the same approach. The association further demanded restrictions on autorickshaws registered in other districts from operating within Jaipur city limits. It also requested the govt to conduct a survey of existing autorickshaw parking stands and grant them official recognition.
