Jodhpur: AIIMS Jodhpur Tuesday performed Rajasthan’s first complex Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) to remove a massive 10×10 cm rectal tumour without open surgery.The procedure was carried out by the gastroenterology team, marking a significant milestone in advanced gastrointestinal care in the state.The tumour, identified as a laterally spreading tumour (LST), covered a large portion of the rectal wall, making it a challenging case that would typically require major abdominal surgery.However, the team removed the entire lesion using the minimally invasive ESD technique in an operation that lasted about eight hours.Associate professor Dr Ashish Agarwal, in the dept of gastroenterology, said the procedure helped avoid open surgery, preserved the organ, reduced complications and ensured faster recovery. He added that the patient has recovered well and is being discharged in stable condition, highlighting the institute’s growing expertise in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.
