SMS Hospital doctors perform rare laparoscopic surgery on 106-Year-old woman

106-year-old woman undergoes surgery for removal of gallbladder at SMS hospitalJaipur: The city’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital successfully performed a rare, high-risk laparoscopic surgery on a 106-year-old woman, removing her gallbladder and extracting stones from the common bile duct in a two-stage procedure. The patient was discharged from the hospital Saturday, within a day after the surgery. The patient, Banarsi, a resident of Jhunjhunu, was admitted to the surgery department with a serious condition involving gallbladder stones along with stones lodged in the common bile duct, a combination that can trigger severe pain, infection, jaundice and other complications if not treated promptly. The doctors examined her and decided to conduct surgical removal of the gallbladder, which is known as cholecystectomy. The complex operation was carried out by doctors of Surgical Unit-2 using advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. “The surgery involved high risk due to the age of the patient. We conducted post-operative care to reduce risk by examining her heart health and other parameters. The doctors first removed stones from the common bile duct endoscopically Wednesday. After stabilising her condition, they prepared her for removal of her gallbladder. The surgery was completed Friday in 45 minutes without any complications. We took precautions, as she was quite old and could develop anaesthesia-related or age-related complications,” SMS Hospital’s senior professor (general surgery) Dr Amit Jain told TOI.“At any age, gallbladder with stones should be removed to avoid any complications such as cancer, pancreatitis and other such issues,” said Jain. The doctors clarified that the surgery was conducted despite the old age of the patient because there are always risk chances of cancer related to the gallbladder if it is not removed in time.Hospital officials said the patient remained stable post-surgery and was discharged after 24 hours of observation. Jain noted that such a successful outcome at 106 years is extremely rare and could be the first reported case of its kind for SMS Hospital, highlighting both careful patient management and surgical expertise.
