Jaipur: The Supreme Court Wednesday took on record the Rajasthan govt’s compliance regarding the pollution of the Jojari-Bandi-Luni river system, commending the collaborative efforts of the high-level ecosystem oversight committee and state authorities.The matter primarily addresses the detrimental effects of industrial effluents and untreated sewage on the river network, which have serious implications for agriculture, groundwater quality, local ecosystems, and public health in western Rajasthan. During the proceedings, Additional Advocate General Shiv Mangal Sharma reported to court that all logistical and administrative issues noted in the committee’s initial report have been resolved. The committee’s first status report, presented in court, detailed inspections of industrial clusters, sewage treatment plants, and affected villages, uncovering extensive environmental damage due to pollution. The report highlighted issues such as the degradation of agricultural land, groundwater contamination, and ecological harm, prompting the committee to propose comprehensive measures for the river’s restoration. These include the formulation of a scientifically-based blueprint for rejuvenating the Jojari–Bandi–Luni river network, which the Rajasthan govt pledged to support. Counsel for both industries and the ministry of environment and forest voiced no objections to the committee’s recommendations. The Supreme Court expressed its expectation for continued collaboration from the state govt and the pollution control board, commending the committee for its public-interest efforts. After hearing submissions, the court reserved its order, which will be passed after considering the committee’s recommendations and the further remedial steps required for restoration of the river system.
