Jaisalmer: A significant milestone in India’s indigenous defence capabilities was achieved at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer district Wednesday with the successful maiden proof trial of the Pinaka Extended Range Rocket.Solar Industries India Ltd carried out the trial of two production lots of the rocket system, marking a key milestone in indigenous rocket artillery systems.According to the company, a total of 24 Pinaka Enhanced Range rockets were test-fired during the exercise to evaluate performance under field conditions. The tests focused on critical parameters, including accuracy, consistency and lethality.Senior Indian Army officials, along with company experts and scientists, were present during the trial. Rockets were fired at varying distances and under different conditions to assess reliability across scenarios. Officials said all rockets performed in line with expected parameters, demonstrating effective target engagement capability, with detailed technical analysis conducted post-trial to validate performance metrics. They said the maiden proof trial involving production batches indicated readiness for induction and operational deployment.The Pinaka Extended Range Rocket System is an advanced version of the existing Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher, which has already been inducted into the Indian Army. The upgraded system offers enhanced strike range and improved precision, boosting long-range firepower capabilities.Developed under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, the Pinaka system highlights the growing role of private sector participation in defence manufacturing, alongside efforts led by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).Defence experts said validation of production lots could pave the way for large-scale manufacturing and future exports of the Pinaka system amid global interest in cost-effective and reliable artillery solutions.
