Jaipur: The zone segregation policy for e-rickshaws, implemented from Feb 13, has largely failed to make an impact, with most vehicles continuing to operate freely across the city despite restrictions.Officials said only 2,539 of Jaipur’s 27,460 registered e-rickshaws were allotted zones through a lottery process. Enforcement has proved difficult as thousands of unallotted vehicles remain on roads, stretching the traffic department’s capacity. DCP (Traffic) Sumeet Meharada said colour-coded stickers were issued to identify allotted vehicles, but tracking violations remains a challenge. “We will soon begin action. Those allotted must operate only in their designated zones. Others must seek allotment in any of the seven zones or face seizure,” he said. Under the policy, Jaipur has been divided into seven zones — north, east, south, east, central, railway junction and Walled City. The Walled City zone has five routes, each capped at 50 e-rickshaws. Officials admitted response was poor in five zones, barring railway junction and Walled City. Over 90% of e-rickshaws currently operate in and around the Walled City, and authorities say the policy aims to ensure more balanced distribution across the city.
