Jodhpur: In compliance with the Supreme Court‘s directives, jailed Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to AIIMS Jodhpur for a medical examination early Saturday morning. He has been in Jodhpur Central Jail since Sept 27 last year.According to AIIMS sources, Wangchuk was brought for tests at the hospital’s gastroenterology department.The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition by Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Aagmo, had sought a medical report of Wangchuk on Feb 2.Aagmo in her petition had expressed serious concern about her husband’s health in jail, alleging that Wangchuk’s health was deteriorating due to contaminated water and the lack of proper facilities in the prison.During the hearing, the additional solicitor general claimed that over the past four months, jail doctors had examined Wangchuk 21 times, and the last check-up was conducted on Jan 26.Objecting to this submission, Wangchuk’s counsel Kapil Sibal stated that Wangchuk was suffering from persistent stomach pain due to the jail’s water.The Supreme Court directed the jail administration to immediately get Wangchuk examined by specialist doctors and submit a detailed report to court.In compliance with the court’s direction, a police contingent took him to AIIMS around 6:30am, where a team of gastroenterologists and other specialists conducted several medical tests. After the examination process that lasted about two hours, he was taken back to jail.The jail administration will now submit his medical report directly to the Supreme Court, on the basis of which the court may take a further decision regarding his treatment or prison facilities.Considering Wangchuk’s popularity and the sensitivity of the case, heavy police deployment was made at AIIMS. To ensure that there was no inconvenience to ordinary patients and that there were no security lapses, he was brought to the hospital early in the morning.
