Jaisalmer: Balotra police seized 508 kg of illegal opium poppy husk from a car and arrested a man after a 14-km-long chase late Thursday night through sand dunes and dense brush along Pareu, close to the international border with Pakistan. Superintendent of police, Balotra, Ramesh, said the arrest followed a tip-off regarding an SUV allegedly transporting a large quantity of illegal narcotics from Navatala towards Pareu. The suspect car rammed through a roadblock and continued driving for several kilometres with a deflated tyre before police teams were finally able to catch up to it. A loaded pistol with four live rounds, ten fake number plates and 25 bags of illegal opium poppy husk were recovered from the car, police said. The seized SUV was later found to be stolen. Police said the arrested person, identified as Premprakash, operates a gang that provides stolen vehicles to drug smugglers. A case has been registered in the matter. TNN
