Jaipur: A man secured the position of assistant professor of geography at a govt college in Rajsamand by claiming he was hearing-impaired—until a fresh medical test at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital exposed his lie. Another 30-year-old faked visual impairment to obtain a teaching job in Bikaner but was found to be fully fit. They are among 24 govt employees in Rajasthan who faked disabilities to secure coveted jobs under the reserved quota. Teachers, assistant professors, stenographers—none of them disabled, but all armed with forged certificates. A damning probe by the Special Operations Group (SOG) has now exposed the scam, with a re-examination panel declaring them physically and medically fit. The SOG asked a medical team of experts to re-examine 29 public servants who were selected under the disabled quota in recruitment exams in the past five years. The result: 24 were declared not disabled. “Only five individuals were found to have a disability of 40% or more—the bare minimum to qualify,” said ADG (SOG) VK Singh. “A major racket is suspected in forging these certificates. We will now zero in on those who helped issue fake disability certificates without proper medical tests,” he added. SOG SP Gyan Chand Yadav said of the 13 employees who claimed hearing impairment, all were declared medically unfit for the disability quota. Of eight listed as visually impaired, six were found not meeting the test for the same disability. “Similarly, five of eight claiming locomotor or other disabilities were deemed ineligible,” Yadav said. Some didn’t even show up for re-testing despite official summons. “We received over 40 complaints about nearly 66 such candidates across departments. Investigations are underway,” said Yadav, adding that the FIR will be filed against all 24 suspects. Among those now under the scanner are suspects who went on to become assistant professors in govt colleges in Rajsamand and Bharatpur. They earlier claimed to be hearing-impaired, but the test suggested otherwise. Likewise, a woman working as a Sanskrit teacher in Bhilwara and a man posted as a third-grade teacher in Dausa were found to have 0% hearing impairment during the medical examination. A senior police official said that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as even from 29 candidates tested, 24 failed to meet the disability quota they claimed. Once a larger group of public employees undergo the test, there is a likelihood that more secrets will emerge. The SOG also said that the doctors who granted such certificates will also be probed.
